Understanding Psychic Abilities: A Guide to Your Intuitive Senses

Psychic abilities are deeply connected to our intuition, guiding us through insights, feelings, and messages beyond our physical senses. While everyone has some level of psychic potential, developing these abilities requires awareness, practice, and trust in yourself.
There are several forms of psychic perception, each working uniquely for different individuals. Below, we explore the main types and provide practical techniques to help you strengthen them.
Clairvoyance – Clear-Seeing

Clairvoyance is the ability to see images, symbols, or visions within the mind’s eye, also known as the Third Eye, located between the eyebrows. Some clairvoyants experience vivid dream-like visions, while others see flashes of imagery that hold symbolic meaning.
For example, when I first started developing my clairvoyance, I would see random images during meditation—faces, places, even numbers. At first, I dismissed them as imagination, but over time, I learned they were messages. Keeping a journal helped me make sense of these visions, as sometimes their meanings only became clear later.
Many clairvoyants use tools like tarot cards, crystal balls, or scrying mirrors to help focus their abilities. However, a strong clairvoyant may receive visions without any external tools, often appearing like a movie playing in their mind.
How to Develop Clairvoyance
Third Eye Activation: Close your eyes and focus on the space between your eyebrows. Imagine an indigo light expanding in this area, clearing and strengthening your psychic sight.
Visualization Exercises: Each day, visualize an object in detail—its color, shape, and texture. Strengthening your mental imagery enhances clairvoyant perception.
Dream Journaling: Before bed, set the intention to receive messages through dreams. Upon waking, write down any visions or symbols you remember.
Scrying Practice: Use a mirror, bowl of water, or crystal ball. Gaze into it softly and let your mind relax, allowing images to form naturally.
Clairaudience – Clear-Hearing

Clairaudience is the ability to hear messages, sounds, or voices from the spiritual realm. Unlike external sounds, these messages often come as thoughts that are distinct from your own.
This ability can be subtle, like hearing your name called when no one is around, or stronger, like receiving clear messages from guides or spirits. I remember a time when I was at a crossroads in my life, unsure of my next step. One night, just before sleep, I heard a soft but firm voice in my mind say, “Trust yourself.” That simple message gave me the reassurance I needed.
Some clairaudients hear guidance in the form of songs, whispers, or even ringing tones. Learning to differentiate between your own thoughts and spiritual messages is key.
How to Develop Clairaudience
Silent Meditation: Spend time in complete silence and focus on any sounds, words, or inner whispers that come through.
Listening Exercises: Close your eyes and identify distant background sounds. Strengthening your physical hearing sharpens your psychic hearing.
Chanting & Mantras: Repeating spiritual mantras raises your vibration and enhances your ability to receive clear messages.
Automatic Writing: Ask a question and begin writing whatever thoughts come to mind. This technique helps channel clairaudient messages.
Clairsentience – Clear-Feeling

Clairsentience is the ability to feel energy, emotions, and sensations that are not your own. This gift allows you to sense the emotions of others, past events, or even spiritual presences.
Empaths fall under this category, as they absorb the emotions and energies of those around them. If you’ve ever walked into a room and immediately sensed tension, sadness, or excitement without anyone saying a word, you’ve experienced clairsentience.
I struggled with this ability in my early years because I would unknowingly take on the emotions of others. I’d leave a conversation feeling drained, only to realise later that I had absorbed someone else’s stress. Learning grounding techniques and energetic protection helped me regain balance.
How to Develop Clairsentience
Energy Scanning: Hold your hand over objects or people and sense any warmth, tingling, or emotional impressions.
Grounding Exercises: Stand barefoot on the ground and visualize roots growing from your feet, anchoring you to the earth.
Breathing with Awareness: Breathe deeply and scan your body for any sudden shifts in emotions or sensations. This strengthens your ability to distinguish between your energy and others’.
Psychometry: Hold an object belonging to someone and tune into any emotions or images you receive from it.
Empathy – The Emotional Connector

Empathy, a form of clairsentience, allows you to deeply feel the emotions of others as if they were your own. While this can be a powerful tool for understanding and helping people, it can also be overwhelming if not managed properly.
Empaths must learn to set energetic boundaries to avoid becoming emotionally exhausted. Visualising a protective light around yourself or using techniques like the “disconnect button” (mentally imagining hanging up a phone to cut energetic ties) can help maintain balance.
How to Manage Empathy
Shielding Visualization: Imagine a golden light surrounding you, blocking out unwanted emotional energy.
Salt Baths: Taking a bath with sea salt helps cleanse absorbed energies.
Cord Cutting: If you feel drained after interacting with someone, visualize cutting an energetic cord between you and them.
Check-In With Yourself: Ask, “Is this emotion mine or someone else’s?” If it’s not yours, consciously release it.
Clairalience – Clear-Smelling & Clairgustance – Clear-Tasting

Clairalience is the ability to psychically smell scents that have no physical source. This is often associated with mediumship, where spirits use familiar scents—like a loved one’s perfume or cigar smoke—to make their presence known.
Similarly, clairgustance is the ability to taste things without physically consuming them. A spirit might send the taste of a specific dish as a message to validate their identity to a medium or loved one.
I once experienced clairalience during a reading when I suddenly smelled fresh roses, even though none were in the room. When I mentioned this to my client, they burst into tears—roses had been their grandmother’s favourite flower, and she had passed just months before.
How to Develop Clairalience & Clairgustance
Scent Recall: Smell different essential oils or flowers, then close your eyes and try to recall them mentally.
Taste Awareness: Focus on subtle changes in taste while eating, noting any unexpected flavors.
Spiritual Invitation: Ask a spirit to send you a scent or taste as a sign of their presence.
Memory Activation: Recall the smell or taste of something meaningful from your past and see if it triggers an intuitive impression.

Psychic abilities are natural and available to everyone. The more you practice tuning in to your intuition, the stronger your gifts will become. Whether you experience clear-seeing, hearing, feeling, or even smelling spiritual messages, learning to trust and interpret these signs will enhance both your spiritual growth and your ability to help others.
